The most common mistake when buying a dryer is treating the "lowest unit price" as the "lowest total cost of ownership." 1. Identify Your Crop Type
Different crops vary in initial moisture, temperature tolerance, granule shape and flowability. Corn can have an initial moisture of 25–30% and requires high-temperature, fast drying; rice demands strict control of the head-rice cracking rate (percentage of fissured kernels) — drying temperature must not be too high and the moisture-removal rate must be gentle, so a model with a tempering/cooling stage is preferable; soybeans have a thin seed coat and crack easily, requiring low-speed, gentle drying; and seed grain must be held at ≤40°C to preserve germination. Lock in your primary crop first, then choose the model.
2. Calculate Your Capacity Requirement
Daily throughput = harvest-window length × peak daily intake. What matters is not "how much you harvest in a year" but "how much you harvest on the busiest day." Coal is cheap but has high emissions and requires dust removal and desulfurization; biomass pellets use agricultural residues and are relatively low-carbon, but have lower calorific value and need a larger combustion chamber; natural gas is clean and efficient but depends on pipeline availability; electricity has zero emissions but is costly; diesel/fuel oil is flexible but exposed to oil-price swings. 5. Site and Foundation Conditions
Dryers are typically 10 to 20-plus meters tall, and you need to assess: foundation bearing capacity, power supply capacity (large units may require a transformer upgrade), access and queuing space for grain trucks, and required fire-safety clearance around the site. Many projects stall because "the equipment arrives and then we find the voltage is insufficient" — early site surveys save a lot of rework.
6. Automation Level and Labor Cost
Full PLC control vs. semi-automatic vs. manual differ by tens of thousands of yuan in investment, but the labor saved each year and the avoided losses from human error can far exceed that. For farms far from cities and overseas projects, the payoff from remote monitoring plus automation is especially clear. 7. Supplier Selection: Don't Look Only at Equipment Price
When comparing equipment quotes, include these factors in total cost: freight (inland + ocean), installation, commissioning, spare-part pricing, and after-sales response time. A supplier quoting 10% lower that cannot deliver after-sales support may cost you far more than that 10% in a single harvest-season downtime event.
